How to Introduce Retinol Without the Horror Stories
A dermatologist's guide to starting retinol the right way — for Indian skin types
Understanding Retinol's Mechanism
Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative that must be converted by the skin into retinoic acid — the biologically active form — before it exerts its effects. This conversion happens in two oxidative steps: retinol → retinaldehyde → retinoic acid. The conversion process is what makes retinol gentler than prescription tretinoin (which is pre-converted retinoic acid) but also slower to show results.
Once active, retinoic acid binds to nuclear retinoic acid receptors and directly regulates gene expression related to: keratinocyte differentiation (accelerated cell turnover), fibroblast activity (increased collagen and elastin synthesis), and melanocyte regulation (reduced melanin production). The result is genuinely multi-functional — it improves texture, reduces pigmentation, and firms skin simultaneously.
The Start Low, Go Slow Protocol
For someone new to retinol, we recommend the following schedule with VEYLOR's Repair Night Concentrate (0.3%):
- Weeks 1–4: Apply 2 nights per week on non-exfoliant nights. Always follow with the Rhodo Hydra Advanced Moisturizer within 5 minutes.
- Weeks 5–8: If no irritation, increase to 4 nights per week.
- Week 9 onwards: Nightly use is appropriate for most users.
The "sandwich method" — applying moisturizer before and after retinol — is useful for the first 2 weeks if you find even 2x/week causes dryness. Once the skin adjusts, apply retinol directly to dry skin for maximum absorption.
The SPF Non-Negotiable
Retinol increases photosensitivity — not by making the skin intrinsically more reactive to UV, but by accelerating cell turnover to produce newer, less photo-adapted cells at the surface. These cells are more vulnerable to UV-induced DNA damage. The solution is consistent SPF 50+ every morning, regardless of whether you spent 10 minutes or 10 hours outdoors. This is not optional when using retinol.
