How to design a PM protocol that takes full advantage of skin's nocturnal repair window

The Biology of Nighttime Skin Repair

Several physiological changes occur during sleep that make it the optimal window for active skincare treatment. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases at night as the skin's barrier becomes more permeable — this means actives penetrate more deeply, but it also means hydration can escape more readily. An occlusive moisturizer applied after your actives seals in water and active ingredients simultaneously.

Cell mitosis (division) peaks between midnight and 4am in most individuals, meaning that actives that support cell renewal — retinol, AHAs, peptides — are working at their moment of greatest relevance. Inflammation also decreases during sleep, which explains why sensitising actives cause less irritation when used at night versus in the morning.

The Optimal PM Sequence

1. Double cleanse if you are wearing SPF or makeup: an oil cleanser first, followed by the Clarity Gel Cleanser. Single cleanse is sufficient on non-SPF days.

2. Treatment actives: on exfoliant nights (2–3x per week), apply the AHA BHA Toner to dry skin and wait 5–10 minutes. On non-exfoliant nights, apply the Repair Night Concentrate directly to clean skin.

3. Eye treatment: tap the Deep Hydration Eye Cream around the orbital bone with the ring finger.

4. Moisturizer: the Rhodo Hydra Advanced Moisturizer as the final step, applied generously to damp or dry skin, sealing in all previous layers and providing the barrier support the skin needs during its repair cycle.

Rotating Actives Intelligently

A common mistake is using all actives every night. The most effective PM routine alternates: exfoliant nights (AHA BHA Toner) should not be the same as retinol nights (Repair Night Concentrate). A sample week might be: Monday — retinol; Tuesday — brightening serum only; Wednesday — exfoliant; Thursday — retinol; Friday — brightening serum; Saturday — exfoliant; Sunday — hydration-focused, no actives. This rotation maximises results while minimising cumulative irritation.
